IFC Rush Week: A new chapter for Augusta University's Greek Life

By Davis T. Harley | Staff Writer

This week marks the beginning of a new chapter for Augusta University's fraternities as Spring Rush kicks off. Running all next week, Spring Rush offers an opportunity for students to find a place to call home within the university's four Interfraternity Council (IFC) organizations. While smaller than the fall recruitment period, Spring Rush plays a crucial role in the continued growth of Greek life at AU.

While AU’s Greek community may be smaller compared to larger universities, it provides just as many—if not more—opportunities. Joining a fraternity at a smaller school can foster deeper, more meaningful connections. Unlike larger universities where students often don’t know everyone in their chapter, AU’s fraternities promote closer-knit relationships, allowing members to work together and support each other in ways that feel more personal.

A personal experience: Brock Hasten, Pi Kappa Phi

Brock Hasten, a freshman member of Pi Kappa Phi who joined last fall, shared his thoughts on the recruitment process at AU. “I’ve heard a lot about rushing at bigger schools, but at Augusta University, I can say you’ll have an experience like no other. Joining Greek life gave me the push I needed to get more involved on campus. Rush allowed me to meet new people and form lasting relationships—more than I ever expected.”

Hasten also highlighted the value of connections that extend beyond campus, particularly with alumni who were part of AU’s Greek community. “Joining a fraternity opens up a whole new world of opportunities and alumni networks that can accelerate your career and provide a platform to get your name out there, no matter where you plan to go.”

Building a support system: Andrew Wooten, IFC President

For some students, joining a fraternity is about more than just academics or socializing—it’s also about finding a support system. Andrew Wooten, the President of the Interfraternity Council, reflects on his own experience with recruitment. “When I first signed up for Rush, I wasn’t very interested in Greek life. But I quickly realized that being in a fraternity isn’t just about hanging out with a group of guys. It’s about joining a lifelong brotherhood you can always count on.”

A focus on leadership, philanthropy, and academics

Greek life at AU isn’t just about the social scene. Each fraternity is dedicated to leadership development and making a positive impact on the community. AU’s fraternities have raised over $32,000 for their respective philanthropies in the past three semesters. This past semester alone, Pi Kappa Phi raised $11,000 during their annual War of the Roses event.

Education is also a top priority. All IFC fraternities require a minimum GPA of 2.7 for membership, ensuring that academics come first. In addition, fraternity members have access to various scholarship opportunities, both through their chapter and national interfraternity organizations.

Join the rush

Spring Rush begins Monday, February 3, and registration is open until Thursday, February 6. Whether you're seeking new friendships, leadership opportunities, or a strong support network, Greek life at Augusta University offers a unique experience that can help you grow both personally and professionally.
